RAISING HEALTHY, LOYAL, AND INTELLIGENT SHEPHERDS
At Prairie Land Breeders, we adhere to a philosophy of allowing our german shepherds to do what they do best - be dogs! Our Shepherds are raised in a natural and nurturing environment, allowing them to develop into well-balanced and resilient companions. We believe in providing our dogs with the best possible start in life, and this includes a wholesome diet, regular exercise, and plenty of love and attention.
Why Did We Choose Long-haired German Shepherds?
When looking for a new puppy for our family back in 2017, our goal was to find a dog that was smart, energetic, and loved people and hopefully,a perk would be that it would look great too! When we found a breeder that was listing longhaired german shepherds we immediately fell in love.
We never intended to start a dog breeding business when we bought our first long-haired german shepherd; Roxy our now retired Dame. We saw as Roxy was growing up that she was significantly more intelligent, obedient, and loyal compared to previous dogs that had been a part of the family farm. We were so impressed with her that we decided to dive into the world of dog breeding. Three years later Dude; our sire joined the family. Both Dude and Roxy captured our hearts right from the beginning, and every puppy that came after reflected the best of both their parents. When Roxy had her first litter with a sire outside of our breeding program we kept back a female puppy which was Bella!

More About the Breed
Long-haired German Shepherds are a unique and beautiful breed that stands out from their short-haired counterparts. Their luxurious coats are not only aesthetically pleasing but also provide extra protection from the elements. These dogs are known for their intelligence, loyalty, and versatility, making them excellent companions for families of all ages and stages!
Long-haired German shepherds are beautiful dogs and have a similar demeanour to their standard-coated counterparts. Long-haired german shepherds are more calm, less prey driven and less work driven. Long-haired german shepherds still have excellent endurance, are protective and have a loyal personality. Long-haired german shepherds are not as aggressive as their short-haired cousins. The long hair is quite rare because it did not fit the AKC breed standard until 2010 and, at one time in history, was nearly bred out completely. Long Haired German Shepherds are now bred mostly for their stunning looks and friendly behaviour. Their long coat comes from recessive genes, which is another reason it can be hard to find.
Long-haired German shepherds look similar to classic German shepherds. They maintain the same colour pattern as a standard shepherd but their long hair provides a unique look. Their coats are long, sleek, and shiny. Their ears and faces have a "feathering" around them and their tails are significantly fluffier. They tend to have longer hair on the chest that is reminiscent of a ruff or a lion’s mane.
These dogs are very caring of their people, when out on walks our dogs can be observed "shepherding" us as we walk. Our dogs are constantly engaged and they keep an eye on us as their "herd". We've had many comments about how beautiful our dogs are. Many happy customers have told us that they have stopped asking where they got their dog from because of how unique and different they look!
