FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Why Choose Prairieland Breeders?
At Prairie Land Breeders, we adhere to a philosophy of allowing our german shepherds to do what they do best - be dogs! Our Shepherds are raised in a natural and nurturing environment, allowing them to develop into well-balanced and resilient companions. We believe in providing our dogs with the best possible start in life, and this includes a wholesome diet, regular exercise, and plenty of love and attention.
  • What Makes Long-haired German Shepherds Special?
Long-haired German shepherds are beautiful dogs and have a similar demeanour to their standard-coated counterparts. Long-haired german shepherds are more calm, less prey driven and less work driven. Long-haired german shepherds still have excellent endurance, are protective and have a loyal personality. Long-haired german shepherds are not as aggressive as their short-haired cousins. The long hair is quite rare because it did not fit the AKC breed standard until 2010 and, at one time in history, was nearly bred out completely. Long Haired German Shepherds are now bred mostly for their stunning looks are friendly behaviour. Their long coat comes from recessive genes, which is another reason it can be hard to find. Long-haired German shepherds look similar to classic German shepherds. They maintain the same colour pattern as a standard shepherd but their long hair provides a unique look. Their coats are long, sleek, and shiny. their ears and faces have a "feathering" around them and their tails are significantly fluffier. They tend to have longer hair on the chest that is reminiscent of a ruff or a lion’s mane.
  • Do long-haired German Shepherds require special grooming?
Yes, long-haired German Shepherds need regular grooming to prevent matting and keep their coat healthy. Brushing a few times a week and occasional baths are recommended.
  • How much exercise do German Shepherds need?
German Shepherds are active dogs that require at least 1-2 hours of exercise daily. This can include walks, runs, and mental stimulation activities.
  • How Big Will the Puppies Get?
Puppy sizes do vary; no breeder can predict the exact weight. We can make an educated prediction. Estimates are based on parents' size. Most align with larger parents. Males trend bigger, females smaller. Refer to the dam and sire weight for insight.
  • How Soon Can a Puppy Go Home?
Our puppies need to be 8 weeks old before they can go to their new forever home. The greatest impact on future social behaviour will be made by any experience that happens at this point. If you choose to make one of our puppies your new best friend, we can send lots of updates till they can come home though!
  • Why Unregistered German Shepherds?
Registering and breeding under the CKC can limit both the breeder and the buyer, so we have chosen not to associate with the CKC. Both Roxy and Dude are from CKC bloodlines, but their puppies will not be able to be registered with the CKC. A bit of history: The original german shepherd club originally banned long-haired GSDs without undercoats from competing in dog shows but eventually, banned the hair type entirely. However, the SV lifted the ban in 2010. Some believe the ban was lifted in order to prevent the long-haired trait from going completely extinct. In the United States, long-haired GSDs are still not considered part of the breed standard (as determined by the AKC). However, the rareness and beauty of their long hair make them desirable to dog owners.
